Crystal at Moneysavingmom just posted her Financial Checkup for July. We just made our first mortgage payment this month, so we’ve been trying to “feel out” our new budget. There are so many expenses that go along with moving into a new home that we didn’t forsee. I think we’re doing all right, but we do need to make a more structured budget in the future. Without knowing what our utility bills will be, etc., that’s been kind of difficult. So, definitely, a goal for August would be to take an honest look at our expenses and see if we can do anything to improve.

Will you expand on the unforeseen house expenses when you first moved in? It would be helpful for us as we are looking forward to buying a house in the next few years and are interested in what came up and what you spent.
Thanks!
Everything needs to be inspected and maintained! For instance, today someone is coming to do an annual checkup on our heating and cooling systems. It’s going to cost $159. Just to turn on the fancy-schmancy sprinkler system costs $300! We decided not to do that since we’ve had so much rain. Actually, today I went to Jewel and bought a couple of cheapy sprinklers on sale.
We had to buy a lot of stuff for the house. We lived in the city in a condo before, so we didn’t have any supplies for maintaining the yard.
